
DeWitt began performing on stage at the age of 13. She graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree at Ball State University. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. She was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship in addition to the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While attending UCLA she worked as a secretary before making her debut on television in the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was guided by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has claimed that they have did not meet. DeWitt's character as Janet Wood in Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 is her most famous. She was cast in the pilot of the show, and then selected. Janet was also in an episode of the show The Ropers, which she appeared in the year 1979. DeWitt was the only actor to appear in the show's 1984 finale. She then appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that, she stopped acting for many years. In June 1991, she returned to acting by performing in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. [1] She was also a part-time actress in the show Spring Fling which was a 1995 TV comedy. A character based upon her, voiced by an actress, appeared in a 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She was featured on an episode of Cybill and also had an appearance on the last episode of Living Single. The 2000s work of her include TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
